The \u201eGrenzsteintrophy\u201c (Boundary Stone Trophy) will offer Europe\u2019s first mountain bike self support ride <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>over a distance of approx. 1,300 kms (800 miles). Starting June 24<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>th<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/sup><\/span> 2009, the GST will take off-road bikers along the former border that divided the former two German states FDR and GDR \u2013 20 years after the frontier’s fall.<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\n

\u201c<\/span>Where the front line of the Cold War<\/span><\/span><\/span> used to be, Germany’s longest green corridor is now flourishing.<\/span><\/span><\/span> Its topography <\/span><\/span><\/span>and course pro<\/span><\/span><\/span>mise a very diversified mountain bike tour\u201c, <\/span><\/span><\/span>GST initiator Gunnar<\/span><\/span><\/span> Fehlau states. \u201cYou don’t have to cross Alaska on your bike to get the ultimate nature challenge!\u201c he adds.<\/span><\/span><\/span> According to Fehlau, the<\/span><\/span><\/span> GST will offer the experience of a self support ride for the first time in Europe and thus present \u201can antipode to sports mass events with all their negative side effects <\/span><\/span><\/span>like po<\/span><\/span><\/span>llution, doping and commerce.\u201c<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The GST follows the former border between the two Germanys \u2013 20 years after the fall of the Berlin Wall. \u201cWe’re riding on soil steeped in history\u201c, Fehlau says. \u201cOn that account we’re not only providing a highly demanding physical task but also a political and historical memorial ride.\u201c<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\n

The Grenzsteintrophy<\/span><\/span><\/span> is neither a <\/span><\/span><\/span>race <\/span><\/span><\/span>nor a bicycle to<\/span><\/span><\/span>ur. In fac<\/span><\/span><\/span>t, it<\/span><\/span><\/span> is a conjointly starting but individually accomplished an<\/span><\/span><\/span>d athletically demanding m<\/span><\/span><\/span>ountain bike <\/span><\/span><\/span>ride of approx. 1,300 kilometres (800 mile<\/span><\/span><\/span>s). Fehlau counts on avid participants to ride from the shore of the Baltic Sea near L\u00fcbeck to Mittelhammer in the region of Vogtland within seven days. There will be no time li<\/span><\/span><\/span>mit in which the participants have to finish.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

As role models for GST Fehlau claims the world’s longest mountain bike rides: <\/span><\/span><\/span>Great Divide Race and Tour Divide, leading 4,360 km (2,709 miles)<\/span><\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span><\/span>from Banff, Alberta (Canada) to Antelope Wells, New Mexico (U.S.A.).<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Hence the rules of the GST read rather archaic: no starting fees, no prize money, no service, no time control and no organization along the route. Riders have to supply and resupply themselves. All gear or victuals are to be carried either on the bike or bought along the way. Any kind of prearranged services or use of private assistance is strictly forbidden. All guiding means have to be equally available to all starters. Riding in company of other participators is permitted, whereas the sharing of supplies and equipment <\/span><\/span><\/span>is<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> prohibited. It is the goal of this event to challenge the individual <\/span><\/span><\/span>rider <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>and not a support crew.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\n

There will be no monitoring of the riders, only a call in number. \u201cWe won’t have ranking or prizes \u2013 except of course for the feeling of having honorably mastered an extraordinary task. So cheaters on<\/span><\/span><\/span>ly deceive <\/span><\/span><\/span>themselves\u201c, Fehlau explains. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
