Finisher – #15 GST-Fahrer: Emma O.

Dear GST,
please find the receipt to BUND and a photograph attached (don’t worry, I won’t ride that bike). Why do I want to ride the Grenzsteintrophy? I spent quite a bit of time in Germany last year, it really highlighted the gaps in my history knowledge. Somewhere in the back of my mind I remembered an article in the now defunct Privateer magazine, something about tank tracks. I love a challenge and managed to get hold of a copy to read and with the aid of John Mullineaux found out more about the event.
Whilst the bulk of my wanting to do the event is the old cliche „because it’s there“ it has also made me think a lot about history past and present. The political climate the wall went up in, and the hope as it came down. It now seems crazy to wall in a whole country, yet just across the pond there’s talk of Trumps wall. Did we learn anything?
This year also seems very apt as it’s now the year where the wall has now been down as long as it was up.
I don’t think there’s any better way to learn than to explore for yourself. I am a capable cyclist and used to bikepacking and navigation.
Thank you for reading.
Emma O.
